Marie Van Brittan Brown
Marie Van Brittan Brown was born October 30, 1922, in Queens, New York. She died on February 2nd, 1999, at the age of 76. Marie was an American nurse and an innovator. She is best known for the creation of home security systems. She wanted to create a device that could tell her who was at her front door without having to walk their herself. With the help of her husband in 1966, she devised the first closed circuit television system, or CCTV, which used a group of cameras, peepholes and monitors to show different areas of her home. Marie was inspired or motivated through her cities crime rate. Crime was very high in Queens, New York. Even when police were contacted in an event of a crime or emergency, it would take them a long time to rush over to the scene. Therefore, Marie had a plan to change all of that. The plan was to create her own level of security to protect her home and belongings. This idea would allow her to see everything from the outside of her home and inside and it would allow her to contact police as quickly as possible. Marie Browns Invention has a huge impact on society because many people back then and now are using this idea for themselves and their homes. We all know that technology is evolving and getting better and better each year and or decade. In the society that we live in now, we have many homes security services that many individuals can use to protect the inside and outside of their homes. We have ADT security servicers, Vector security, Brink home security, Google Nest security and many more. Marie Brown and many other black inventors have had a huge impact on technology with the mindset of improving our world. To combat racial bias in computing and technology today, people need to be more pro-active. We need to report any incidents of inappropriate behavior in our world. People need to be held accountable for what they say and or do. This will ensure equality and fairness for not only black men and women inventors but for all different groups of people in the world.
